The main colours used in this movie poster is a mildly dark blue, there is also different shades of blue, black and a bit of red for some text. The red is instantly eye catching as it is the only piece of red on the poster, the text states the movie is 'coming soon' which keeps the audience hooked onto the film and this also an important piece of information as this gives them a sense of mystery when the film will be released, red does represent blood and death which is connected to the horror genre. The blue used in the poster almost looks like the sky when a storm is about to occur you can also describe this as gloomy, blue however can represent the emotion of sadness and something out of the ordinary which i believe the designer of this poster is trying to achieve. Black used in the poster is minimal and it is clear that blue is the dominant colour in this poster, the black used i believe is for shadows, however black does connote fear, death and a sense of space which creates mystery.

The picture used in the poster is of a bridge which shifts into a skull, a skull instantly connotes death, mortality and terror this is a common theme in horror movies, therefore this movie poster does follow common horror conventions. The bridge is seen to break which into the shape of a skull, this may indicate that during the film there was an incident of a bridge being destroyed resulting in  a mass death. There is also the shape of two characters a male and a female on the top of the bridge, they seem to be crouching down and through NVC its as if they are trying to comfort each other and this  may also be present in the film that there is a significant relationship between these two characters which the story revolves around.

Textual analysis of a Teaser Trailer - Martin

But this group of unsuspecting souls was never supposed to survive, and, in a terrifying race against time, the ill-fated group frantically tries to discover a way to escape Death's sinister agenda.
The Final Destination franchise is a popular set of movies in the horror genre; the themes that this film has been centred on are fatalism, predestination and precognition in relation to death. There films are also usually centred on a group of people who die in a series of elaborate, fatal and often gory scenarios. This Textual analysis is of Final Destination 5, the most recent in the franchise and the teaser is 32 seconds in length which is within the teaser trailer limit.
The teaser opens up with the production company logo of Warner Bros. and New Line cinema combined with non-diegetic sound that sounds like a heart beat but at a really fast pace almost a thumping sound, this connotes suspense which builds up the audience for something to happen. The scene then switches to a  establishing shot of a bridge, this is then followed by a sequence of quick cuts which cuts up the scene but allows  the audience to piece together what is happening as a close up of one of the bridge’s cables is seen to snap, then cuts to the bridge having a gap in it, then a series of quick cuts showcasing a tragedy  there’s a scene  where a wide angle shot has been used where you can see the characters and the bridge falling apart,  you also see a man and woman as they are running frantically through NVC they are seen to be scared  and have some distress on their face. There is also a scene with a close up of a dark haired woman’s face with her hand reaching out for something through NVC she seems terrified. As the series of quick cuts are being used the sound quickens and falls to a stop with the last scene of the sequence is a wide angle shot which shows the scenery of the whole bridge and it falling apart.
The trailer then cuts to a blonde woman and dark haired man on the side of the bridge, through NVC I can see that they are both petrified this may indicate the fear of what was happening on the bridge and how they survived there near death experience.

Movie Magazine Draft - Martin

Movie Poster Draft - Martin

This is an idea for our movie poster and i designed it to look like a teacher of some sort with the shirt, blazer and tie as this connotes that it could be a teacher but also that they are prtofessional and have some authority. The face is blank for a reason as to not give away the face of the antagonist of the movie, I also placed a weapon in one hand and amaths book in the other also to create a dramatic effect that there is two sides to our antagonist.

Logo Idea - Martin

This is an idea for our productionn company logo, it features chains which symbolises being trapped or imprisoned harshly, also as our name is chain productions i though that it makes sense to feature some sort of chains involved in our logo.

Length of Trailer: 2:22

Distributed by: Columbia Pictures

Country: United States of America

Budget: $200 Million

Running Time: 158 minutes

Genre: Science Disaster Film

Synopsis:
The trailer opens up with a caption “The Mayan calendar predicted it” which suggests that the Mayans had predicted the exact year that the disaster will occur. The Maya is a Mesoamerican civilization that is mostly known for its art, architecture, Mathematical and Astronomical systems. This causes the audience to question whether this kind of disaster will happen in reality. The non-diegetic music is ‘eerie’; it sets the feeling of suspense in the mind of the audience.

When the geologist Dr. Adrian Helmsley and his team discover that the core of Earth is heating due to solar radiation, he advises the North American President about his findings. The American Govern collects money from the worldwide leaders to build arks to save them with necessary people to rebuild civilization. Meanwhile, the unsuccessful writer Jackson Curtis discloses that the world is near to end and tries to save his son and his daughter from the tragic end.
·         Location: There are some features in the trailer that suggest the movie is located at the United States of America; the movie is located at Los Angeles.  For example, there is a scene that shows the ‘President’ (Danny Glover) speaking directly to the citizens through an electric billboard about 2012 being the end of the world. The features also include Yellow taxis; the way the houses are built; the cities and the tall buildings.
·         Characters: The characters that are portrayed in the trailer are a father and a daughter/ struggling writer, his ex-wife, the citizens in the country, the President presenting a speech to his nation, Priests, Christians, Teenagers who are  about to sail but are held back by the large crack in the ground, Fire-fighters, A Science Conspiracy Theorist/Radio talk show host. The representation of the characters fit the theme of the movie which is a ‘Scientific disaster’. Especially because the character that tries to alert the nation of the oncoming danger. This is because, things like this happen currently in society with people who sometimes try to raise alerts but they either get ignored or rejected from their communities. They are seen as outcasts so they isolate themselves.
·         Pacing: At the beginning of the trailer, the pacing and the captions are slow. This builds tension in the minds of the audience. However, when the buildings, houses and roads begin to crash, the suspense increases. It causes them to question if what they see will truly happen or not. When the background music is introduced towards the end of the trailer, the action quickens till the title of the movie is quietly introduced to the audience. Then there is a fade to black at the end.

In conclusion, after analysing the various elements of this trailer, I have realised and understood a lot of things. Firstly, editing can be difficult because there are a number of things to be considered about the lengths and order of shots.. The trailer is the ain thing that creates the desire in the minds of people to watch the movie so it has to grab the attention of it’s audience. Camera angles, shots and captions must be taken seriously.
Further-more, I have also come to realise that, a trailer or a teaser dosent have to give away so much information about the movie; it is only made to give them an idea. Trailers include a series of selected shots from the film that is being promoted.

Planning and Research - Going to Pieces :The rise and the fall of Slasher film - Martin

This is a film documentary that talks about how horror came into prominence and how also it has declined, it looks like many clips from different horror films focusing on slasher films in particular. there is also comments about the film directors, writers and producers on the time line of slasher films and it also presents the history of  horror films and what films have made the sub genre successful and entertaining. Our group found this very interesting and in particular a comment from John Carpenter who is the writer, director of Halloween stood out to me, 'theres a blood lust in all of us....... and it kills....... and it doesn't care' it adds a real sense of evil in the world.

Here's the trailer to the film documentary:

Update 08/02/2012

Today we visited the store harlequins which was a valuable erxperience as we were able to purchase the make up items that we need for our project. We would also say it was a success as we found what we were looking for which was blood, fake skin and other props to create our characters involved in our Horror project.
